The frequency of earthquake has increased recently. Some earthquakes have devastating effects. If earthquakes can be predicted, then lots of lives can be saved. Here are five ways earthquakes can be predicted.
Unusual animal behavior
Animals have some sensory perceptions that humans don’t have. Some animals have better sniffing, hearing, sensing and seeing power. The earthquake in Liaoning province of China in 1975 was successfully predicted by observing the unusual behavior of animals. Many other earthquakes were also predicted this way.
There is a relationship between earthquake and temperature. A sharp increase in temperature can be noticed before the earthquake. For example, the temperatures rose by 100C at 150C before earthquakes in Lunglin in China in 1976.
Change in water levels
You will observe a drastic change in water level in many wells just before the earthquake. The water level can either rise suddenly or fall suddenly. This observation was made before a lot of earthquakes.
Before any major earthquake, you will feel minor shocks called foreshocks. Some earthquakes have been predicted because of these foreshocks.
Change in seismic wave velocity
We know that waves P, S, and L start from the focus of an earthquake. P and S are called body waves, and L is called a surface wave. P-waves are faster than S-waves. The time lag between P and S waves is called lead time, and it decreases significantly before an earthquake. The abnormality in wave velocity is an indication of an earthquake.
Though these can predict earthquakes, these are not flawless techniques. There is no perfect way of knowing that there will be an earthquake.
