5 Ways Earthquakes Can be Predicted

The frequency of earthquake has increased recently. Some earthquakes have devastating effects. If earthquakes can be predicted, then lots of lives can be saved. Here are five ways earthquakes can be predicted.

Unusual animal behavior

Animals have some sensory perceptions that humans don’t have. Some animals have better sniffing, hearing, sensing and seeing power. The earthquake in Liaoning province of China in 1975 was successfully predicted by observing the unusual behavior of animals. Many other earthquakes were also predicted this way.

Temperature change

There is a relationship between earthquake and temperature. A sharp increase in temperature can be noticed before the earthquake. For example, the temperatures rose by 100C at 150C before earthquakes in Lunglin in China in 1976.

Change in water levels

You will observe a drastic change in water level in many wells just before the earthquake. The water level can either rise suddenly or fall suddenly. This observation was made before a lot of earthquakes.

Before any major earthquake, you will feel minor shocks called foreshocks. Some earthquakes have been predicted because of these foreshocks.

Change in seismic wave velocity

We know that waves P, S, and L start from the focus of an earthquake. P and S are called body waves, and L is called a surface wave. P-waves are faster than S-waves. The time lag between P and S waves is called lead time, and it decreases significantly before an earthquake. The abnormality in wave velocity is an indication of an earthquake.

Though these can predict earthquakes, these are not flawless techniques. There is no perfect way of knowing that there will be an earthquake.

Top 4 Recent Space Discoveries Made

NASA teams are constantly looking to find new planets or other materials in space. They are exploring planets like Mars and Pluto to see if life can exist in those places. Here are some of the recent space discoveries made by these scientists.

1. A new dwarf planet

Before 2005, we all knew that there were nine planets in the solar system and Pluto was the ninth planet. But a ‘dwarf planet’ was discovered in 2005 and was named Eris. It is 27% bigger than Pluto. Later, both Pluto and Eris were said to be ‘dward planets’ and so the official number of planets now in our solar system is eight.

2. Discovery of Exoplanets

Exoplanets were discovered. These are planets that don’t orbit our Sun; it orbits in a different solar system. In early 2015, exoplanet Kepler-452b was discovered. It is called ‘earth’s cousin’ as they are very similar to earth.

3. Proving that black holes are present

People are studying about black holes for centuries now. But it was hard for scientists to prove that they existed. Hubble telescope has helped in proving the existence of black holes. It took pictures of the deepest parts of space. Using the Hubble, the black holes cannot be seen, but it is possible to see where the black hole has pulled in things from around it.

4. Mars exploration

The Viking mission of NASA in 1976 was the first successful mission to Mars. It took very nice colored pictures and brought soil samples. It was suggested that life might be possible on Mars. Recently, the scientists found liquid water on the planet’s surface.

These are very important space discoveries made recently. The new findings will help to take research on space to a new level, and fascinating discoveries can be made.

5 Most Cannibalistic Animals on Earth

There are many species on earth that eat their kind. Though it may seem gross, but it is only natural. Here are the most cannibalistic animals on earth that you may not be aware of.

Praying Mantis

The female of a species of praying mantis called the Mantis religious eats her male counterpart after mating. This is called sexual cannibalism. This act is present in some other insects as well.

The fishes in the tank sometimes eat each other. Some fishes are predators; whereas, some fishes are prey. When you buy fish for your fish tank, it’s hard to know which one is a predator. So, don’t panic if you see your fishes in the tank slowly vanishing. It’s only natural!

The first act of cannibalism in orangutan was reported in 2009. It was witnessed that a female orangutan was eating the body of her dead infant. Chimpanzees also eat monkeys.

King Cobras

The King Cobra feeds on other snakes only. So, it is a wholly cannibal animal. Its venom is very strong, so it helps it to digest the hard skins of other snakes.

Polar Bears

Polar bears are not born cannibals. The changing weather condition as turned them into cannibal animals. There is now less ice in their habitat and so cannot get hold of their normal preys. So, they eat the weak cubs for food.

It ‘s a wonder how an animal can eat another one from their species. But nature has made them such way. Some animals have turned into cannibals due to climate change. This is also a warning how climate change is affecting our planet.
